Boy, I really have to say a big thank you to my Democrat friends. Some of them like to talk about “my” president Donald Trump. Don’t ever remember referring to Obama as “their” President but that’s okay. Didn’t agree with his policies and didn’t like him but he was still my President since I am an American.

In today’s toxic political climate, the Democrats don’t want to claim any part of Trump as President. But, just when the Donald says something that makes me cringe, a Democrat rises to the occasion to try to match him. Of course you can always count on Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer but neither of them can hold a candle to Maxine Waters.

God bless her. She sure holds her own with anything Donald comes up with. We have a sitting member of Congress not only egging on but imploring people to harass any member of the Cabinet and to bring their friends along to join in the ugliness. Because she doesn’t agree with virtually any of the President’s agenda she thinks its okay to harass and threaten anyone who can possibly side with him.

Thank you Maxine for your tolerance and statesmanship. I’m just glad that you aren’t my representative in Congress.

But, I can’t thank Maxine alone. Now rises a new star in the Democratic party in the person of 28 year old socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who won the primary in New York’s 14th congressional district. Unlike Bernie Sanders who calls himself an Independent (even though he ran in the Democratic primary for President) Ms. Cortez is clearly a Democrat and proud to be a socialist.

Looking at her own website, she advocates Medicare for all (in other words universal government run healthcare), a federal jobs guarantee program with a minimum wage of $15 an hour and the ever popular “free” public college tuition and cancelling the debt of those who have student loans. Of course, there are more issues but these are the things that seemed to just jump out at me when I looked at what she espouses as her platform.

Oh my, with all these great plans it’s easy to see how she won the primary in a landside and will almost certainly be elected to congress in November. I guess I missed on her website how much all these things would cost and how we would pay for them in this utopia called the United States of Socialism. But, that is just a minor bump in the race to the far left of America’s mainstream.

I always get a kick any time someone uses the term “free” in anything they are discussing – and not just politics. I have not ever found anything that is truly “free” in this life. Anything we have or will ever have comes at a cost. It might not be your cost but that doesn’t mean that it is free. I’m a Christian and my salvation came at the cost of the death of Jesus so he “paid” the price for my soul.

So when socialists start talking about “free” it is really disingenuous because “free” just means someone else is paying for it. So, why not be honest and say that upfront. Tuition “free” public college doesn’t mean that there isn’t any cost to attend college. It just means that the socialists want someone else to pay for them so they don’t have to.

And, I really like the idea of a $15 minimum wage. I guess that means all these kids working at fast food restaurants are going to finally make a “living” wage and be able to afford to move out of their parent’s house. Of course they won’t be able to buy a burger at their own restaurant since they will double in price. But, hey, they can go to college “free” anyway.

Someone told me that they get mad at all these people who don’t understand that socialism just doesn’t work. My comment was that what was really sad is that too many of these people actually do think that it does work. They truly believe that the government should run everything in our lives and knows better than us how we should spend our money.

Margaret Thatcher, former British prime minister once said in an interview “Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people’s money.” Not sure how you can put socialism in any clearer terms.

Am I proud of some of the things that “my” president says or does? I have to answer no. But, unlike many of the “enlightened left”, I claim him as the President of the United States and I sleep better tonight than I did for the eight years that Obama was in office.

Thank you Maxine Waters and Alexandria Cortez for making Trump look better from time to time.
