The Crowder Roughriders ran their record to 11-2 on the season with a split Saturday against the Iowa Western Reivers, winning the first game 7-5 and dropping the second 2-1.
In the opener, freshmen pitchers Zach Jackson and Jack Jumper continued their solid work on the mound and Crowder’s two runs in the first and five in the third proved enough to hold off the guests from Council Bluff.
In the nightcap, Iowa Western’s single runs in the first and the fifth were just enough to beat Crowder sophomore Joey Cooner. Crowder’s four walks and three errors did not help their cause and Iowa Western starter Keatin Winn and reliever Zach Barnes proved a tough combination.
Crowder began the doubleheader by overcoming Hagen Holmstead’s single and stolen base in the top of the first, then in the bottom half Crowder produced a pair of runs. Lance Harville-Thomas singled home Jacob Adams, who led off with a walk and leadoff walks nearly always lead to a run scored and possible big inning. Harville-Thomas eventually scored on Brady Bradshaw’s groundout.
In the third, an inning began by a Harville-Thomas walk, Luke Price hit a RBI single, Elvis Peralta a two-run single, Kobe Morris a RBI single and Tyler Duncan a RBI single to prove — if nothing else — that singles can be just as productive as doubles, triples and home runs.
For the second game in a row, it was Crowder who started out strong, a reversal from most of the early season.
Freshman starter Jackson won his team-best fourth game in as many decisions. He’s struck out 12 and walked only three in 21 2/3 innings. Jackson’s ERA stands at 2.08. Iowa Western plated five runs against Jackson — his line: five runs (all earned) on 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Picking up the final out, freshman reliever Jumper earned his first save to go along with a pair of victories in relief. Jumper’s struck out 10 and walked four over 8 2/3 innings of work.
Duncan led the Crowder lineup with two hits, while Harville-Thomas, Price, Peralta, Michael Miller and Morris each had one. Peralta drove in a pair of runs and Duncan, Harville-Thomas, Price, Bradshaw and Morris joined the Marshall Thundering Herd recruit.
In the second game, Iowa Western started the contest with a Chris Botsoe single, then Botsoe stole second, advanced to third on an error by Crowder catcher Jacob Charron and scored on a Brandon Bena double.
Adams led off the Crowder first with a double, but Winn retired the side, stranding Adams at third. Adams hit a two-out single in the third to no avail.
In the fourth, Peralta led off the Crowder half with a single and stole second, but he was tagged out between second and third on a Price fielder’s choice. Price stole second and Kyle Blackwell worked a walk, but Cameron Witt’s sharp line drive was caught by Cole Evans to end the inning.
Leading off the Iowa Western fifth, Botsoe worked a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a Chase Hager sacrifice and scored on a Bena single.
Crowder scored its lone run in the sixth — Duncan smashed a leadoff double and Peralta singled home Duncan, driving Winn from the game.
Crazily enough, both losing teams collected the most hits in each game — Iowa Western 10 hits in the opener, Crowder seven in the nightcap.
