WASHBURN — The Diamond Lady Wildcats opened their season with a 3-0 loss Friday to the Southwest Lady Trojans.
Left-handed pitcher Maggie Robbins proved absolutely dominating in the circle and Southwest plated single runs in the first, third and sixth innings, each run more than enough support for Robbins.
Robbins struck out 20 Diamond hitters — there’s only 21 outs in a seven-inning game — and she walked three. Kelsi Eden’s single in the fourth inning provided Diamond’s lone hit of the contest.
It was not like Diamond starter Grace Donnel pitched a bad game — she didn’t — as she fanned eight and walked four. The Lady Wildcats did not help themselves with two errors, while Southwest committed none.
In the first, Heather Windes scored Taylor Swindle on a RBI single. Windes doubled home Kaitlyn Bernard in the third, making Donnel and Diamond pay for one of their four walks. Bernard doubled and scored on a passed ball in the sixth.
Diamond plays next week in the Sarcoxie Tournament. The Lady Wildcats have been district finalists the last two seasons and district champions two seasons ago.
