ANDERSON — It was a good old-fashioned pitchers’ duel Tuesday night between East Newton’s Chance Liveoak and McDonald County’s Tyler Sellers.
Both pitchers went the full seven innings and the duo combined for 16 strikeouts, but four unearned runs cost McDonald County and Liveoak tossed a six-hit shutout in the 4-0 win.
Sellers gave up only three hits — all singles, two by Dallas Smith and one by Ethan Lucke — and struck out 10 Patriots, but scattered four walks and the Mustangs also hurt themselves with three errors.
East Newton scored two runs in the fourth and one each in the sixth and seventh.
Jamie Hanke continued to swing a strong bat for the Mustangs, with three hits including two doubles. Jon Martin, Boston Dowd and James King had the other three Mustang hits.
Hanke hit a two-out double in the first, but pinch runner Michael Steeves was caught stealing at second to end the inning.
The Mustangs only managed single runners in the second and third — on an error and a hit batter.
Liveoak reached on a dropped third strike leading off the fourth and Smith singled. Both players scored on passed balls.
Hanke collected his second double with one down in the fourth and stole third to get the Mustangs as close to putting a run on the scoreboard as they had been all game. Tyler Stoutsenberger flied out to center and Oakley Roessler — who swung a hot bat in the Mickey Mantle Classic — went down strikes, leaving Hanke at third and East Newton with a 2-0 lead.
Martin and King singled in the fifth and pinch runner Reece Cooper reached as far as third. Liveoak worked his way out, however, when Emanuel Baisch flied out to center.
Lucke singled in the East Newton sixth and worked his way around the bases with the help of a passed ball and a McDonald County error.
A couple walks and a couple errors helped East Newton score its fourth run in the seventh.
Dowd singled and Ty Shaver worked a walk, but again Liveoak and the Patriots emerged unscathed as Baisch struck out to end the game.
McDonald County dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-1 Big 8. The Mustangs will be in action Thursday on the road against Big 8 foe Cassville, of course weather permitting.
East Newton improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 Big 8. The Patriots will be in action Thursday on the road against Big 8 foe Lamar, of course weather permitting.
