MIAMI, Okla. — In a battle of two nationally-ranked NJCAA Division I baseball programs, No. 17 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M prevailed 12-7 over No. 5 Crowder on Tuesday.
The Golden Norsemen broke a 7-all tie with five runs in the seventh and closed the door shut on the Roughriders in the eighth and ninth innings.
Crowder jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with six in the second, but NEO scored three in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth and then five in the seventh as Crowder only picked up one more run in the fifth.
Kyle MacDonald, Michael Miller and Kobe Morris each had two hits for the 10-hit Crowder attack, with Jacob Adams driving in three runs with his only hit a three-run home run. Morris and MacDonald each doubled.
Reed Fell paced NEO with three hits and three runs scored, Jacob Keizor drove in four runs and Bryson Lierle had three, and NEO scored five unearned runs against losing pitcher Michael Guerrero.
Crowder — 33-9 on the season — hosts Three Rivers for a four-game Region 16 series Thursday and Friday at Roughrider Field, of course weather permitting. The ‘Riders are 17-3 in Region 16 play and 22-5 at home.
Three Rivers split with St. Charles on Tuesday to move to 13-17 overall and 7-11 Region 16.
In the six-run second Tuesday, MacDonald started it with a bang with a double off Logan Pitts on the very first offering to the plate. Luke Price singled and the ‘Riders were in big business. Kyle Blackwell hit a RBI single, Morris a two-run double and Adams’ three-run homer capped off the inning.
Keizor worked a leadoff walk from Nate Alberius in the NEO second and, as we all know, leadoff walks are never good. Carter Nelson singled and, of course, that set the stage for Lierle to hit an Earl Weaver Special for a 6-3 score.
In the bottom half of the third, Fell worked a walk, Hunter Southerland doubled and Keizor plated Fell on a sacrifice fly to center.
Crowder scored its final run in the fifth when Elvis Peralta worked a walk and MacDonald singled, with Peralta advancing to third and MacDonald advancing to second on the attempt to get Peralta out at third. Peralta scored on Price’s RBI groundout.
NEO earned a 7-all score in the bottom of the fifth against Crowder reliever Colton Larkins. It all started when Joseph Fernando bunted for a single. Those can be just as bad as a leadoff walk, or good depending upon one’s perspective.
Fell singled, Fernando advanced to third, Fell stole second and the Norsemen were in big business of their own. Southerland worked a walk to load the bases and then the runs started coming.
Fernando scored on a passed ball, Fell on a Keizor sacrifice fly and Southerland on a Nelson single.
In the seventh, Lierle reached on an error by Adams. Hayden Hall singled and Calem Nutting walked to load the bases with one down. Fernando drew a walk for the first run, Fell singled home Hall, Southerland drove in Nutting, and Keizor plated Fernando and Fell for the 12-7 advantage.
NEO swept two games from Crowder this season, winning 6-4 at Roughrider Field earlier on.
Crowder lost for the first time in the month of April — now 6-1 — and the ‘Riders lost for the first time since March 18, when Jefferson took a 4-0 game from Crowder in the first game of a Saturday twinbill. Jefferson won three of four from Crowder that series, marking Crowder’s only losses in Region 16 play.
Since that Jefferson series, Crowder swept 12 games from MCC-Maple Woods, St. Louis and Mineral Area for a 13-game winning streak in Region 16 play entering Thursday’s doubleheader.
Crowder and Three Rivers are slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch Thursday and noon Friday.
