FORT SCOTT, Kan. — The Neosho 18s parlayed six runs in the bottom of the second inning into a 10-4 win Saturday afternoon over the Fort Scott Indians at LaRoche Field in a summer showcase tournament hosted by Fort Scott Community College and with games played at primarily LaRoche Field and historic Jaycee Ballpark in Pittsburg.
Neosho improved to 9-2 on the summer with the victory, winners of four straight games.
A.C. Marion led the way offensively with three hits and three RBI, while Gavin Carpenter also drove in three runs and collected two hits. Jacob Galbraith added two hits.
After Hank Selig retired the Indians in order in the first on a pair of groundouts and a popout, Clint Winchester put Neosho on the board in the bottom half with a solo home run, just warming up for the second inning.
Marion worked a leadoff walk in second, nearly always the No. 1 sign for a big inning. Galbraith singled and courtesy runner Peyton Ezell scored on an error, which advanced Galbraith to third. Cole Seward and Mason Ray worked back-to-back walks to load the bases, all preluding Carpenter’s bases-clearing triple.
With two outs, Neosho started all over again with the help of a Winchester walk. Walks with two outs drive a coach nuts …Carpenter stole home during Wincester’s at-bat. Tre Letts and Marion hit consecutive singles, Marion’s bringing home Winchester for a commanding 7-0 lead.
Fort Scott cut its deficit to four on a Matt Campbell two-run home run and a Gunnar Brown RBI single.
Neosho responded with two in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Letts drew an one-out walk in the fourth, then scored on a Marion double. Marion was thrown out at third attempting for a triple. Galbraith hit a two-out triple and came home on a Seward single.
Winchester worked another one-out walk in the fifth and worked his way around the bases after Letts reached on a dropped third strike and a Marion RBI single.
Fort Scott closed out the scoring in the seventh on a Kieran Houlihan RBI double.
Neosho closed out the day Saturday against the BC Yankees.
