William Edward Hickson would have been proud of the Crowder Roughriders during their Region 16 opener Saturday afternoon against St. Charles at Roughrider Soccer Field.
Because, if nothing else, Crowder tried and tried and tried again after first not succeeding, until finally Guillaume Rauzic broke into the open field and put one past St. Charles goalkeeper Anton Mukhin for a thrilling 2-1 win and Crowder’s first win of the new season.
Mukhin had denied Crowder on several scoring opportunities in the second half — including shots by Rauzic — but the freshman kicked the winner in with 4 minutes, 7 seconds remaining in overtime.
Crowder played its third overtime match in as many matches this season and improved to 1-1-1 overall and 1-0 Region 16.
Why so much overtime?
Well, because, of course, 90 minutes of soccer is not enough.
Crowder returns to action today at home against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Crowder and NEO kick off at 4 p.m. from Roughrider Soccer Field.
