DIAMOND — In a battle of winless teams Thursday night at Diamond High, the East Newton Lady Patriots started 2018 with their first win of the season, 59-29 over the Diamond Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Patriots outscored Diamond 30-8 in the first and fourth quarters alone, and outscored the Lady Wildcats 15-7 in the second quarter. East Newton and Diamond played to a 14-all third.

Kinsey Sorrell scored a game-high 23 points to pace the Lady Patriots, while Kendra Hickman and Kaitlyn Hailey each scored 10 to give East Newton three in double-digits.

Brynne Smith added seven points, while Madison McDermott had four, Robin Hussong three, and Laney Jackson two points to round out East Newton’s scoring.

Lauryn Macy led Diamond with nine points and two 3-point goals, while Alyssa Cain had six points and two 3-pointers. Grace Irwin added six points, while Sidney McMullen had four and McKaley Greninger and Rosario Martinez each had two points.

East Newton improved to 1-10 on the season and the Lady Patriots host Big 8 Conference stalwart Mount Vernon on Monday. The Lady Mountaineers defeated East Newton 68-18 in the season opener at the Carthage tournament.

Diamond returned to action Monday on the road against Monett. The Lady Wildcats return to Spring River Valley Conference action Friday on the road against Miller.
