GRANBY — A silver lining in the cloud of Monday night’s 67-37 loss for the East Newton Lady Patriots against Big 8 Conference favorite Mount Vernon would be that East Newton outscored Mount Vernon 26-22 in the second half.

Mount Vernon raced out to a 45-11 halftime lead behind a 23-6 first quarter and a 22-5 second.

In the first meeting of the teams in late November, Mount Vernon led 44-7 at halftime en route to a 68-18 rout for the Lady Mountaineers.

So, East Newton gave a better showing against their conference and district rival.

On Monday night, Kinsey Sorrell scored 16 points to lead the Lady Patriots, while Kaitlyn Hailey finished with seven and Brynne Smith and Madison McDermott each tallied six points. Kendra Hickman rounded out East Newton’s scoring with two.

Meanwhile, the Lady Mountaineers — the defending Class 3, District 12 champions — enjoyed a game-high 21 points from junior guard Cameron Call and Caitlyn Hicks and Camryn Eldridge, two more key pieces from last season, added 18 and 14 points, respectively.

East Newton, 1-11 overall and 0-1 Big 8, returned to action Tuesday at home against Southwest.
