MOUNT VERNON — On paper, the Mount Vernon Lady Mountaineers and the Seneca Lady Indians appeared to be a great mismatch, with Mount Vernon 24-2 and Seneca 10-16 on the season entering their Class 3, District 12 semifinal contest at Mount Vernon.
In their earlier meeting, Mount Vernon defeated Seneca 63-24.
Well, it was a case of second verse, same as the first as Mount Vernon defeated Seneca 67-33 to advance to Saturday’s district championship game.
Mount Vernon outscored Seneca 24-10 in the first quarter, then 10-2 in the second quarter and it was basically over by that point.
On their first basket of the fourth quarter, the Lady Mountaineers initiated the running clock.
Kaitlin Hicks, who reached 1,000 career points with her 21 in Monday’s 95-17 win over Diamond, led Mount Vernon with 18 points, including 11 in the third quarter, and Cameron Call and Lacy Stokes added 14 and 10 respectively for a Lady Mountaineers team with no seniors.
Jo Beard led Seneca with 12 points and battled foul trouble virtually all night, having picked up 60 percent of her five personal fouls in the first quarter alone. Beard fouled out.
Taylor Mailes added 10 points, eight of which she netted in the third quarter.
Seneca should return its entire starting lineup next season — juniors Beard, Mailes, Sarah Hoover, and Chaney Platner, and sophomore Chelsea Beville. Add a year for next year.
