LIBERAL — The East Newton Patriots nearly earned their first win of the season on Friday, but ended taking a 3-2 loss to the Liberal Bulldogs.
Liberal scored two runs in the second and one in the third, good enough for a 3-1 lead and the score stayed the same until East Newton pushed across one run in the top of the seventh.
Liberal’s Bryant Rose and East Newton’s Brett Pendergraft each gave strong performances on the mound, both pitching well enough to win on most days.
None of the five runs scored in the game were earned.
Rose allowed two runs on seven hits over seven innings and he struck out six and walked one, while Pendergraft allowed three runs on four hits over six innings and he struck out five and walked three, his one sore point pitching.
Rose and Pendergraft each finished with more than 100 pitches, Rose 105 and Pendergraft 102.
Offensively, Hunter Liveoak paced East Newton’s seven-hit attack with two, while Pendergraft, Isaiah Stewart, Caleb Coffey, Treyce Ball, and Zeke Chiles each had the other hits. Liveoak and Jacob Allman scored East Newton’s runs and Stewart picked up the Patriots’ lone RBI. Liveoak and Coffey both doubled.
Sean Clark, Tyler West, Weston Wallace, and Brandon Overman each had one of the Bulldogs’ four hits and Rose and Overman collected RBI.
East Newton, 0-10 on the season, looks for its first win Monday on the road against Big 8 Conference foe Cassville.
