HOLLISTER — The Hollister Tigers spoiled the East Newton Patriots’ season opener with a 35-0 win Friday night.
Hollister led 21-0 at halftime and scored 14 more points after halftime, highlighted by Logan Armitage’s 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
The Tigers scored all three times in the first half on the ground on short TD runs. Logan Narvaez scored twice and Jesse Wright worked in a score between Narvaez bookend runs.
Hollister’s kicker made all five extra points.
The Tigers — a football program for eight years — won in head coach Rich Adkins’ debut and reached half of their wins from last season.
Meanwhile, the Patriots continue to look for their first win under second year head coach Broc Wolfe and their first win since 2016.
East Newton’s quest brings the Patriots home to Don Johnston Stadium in Week 2 for a clash against Aurora. The Houn’ Dawgs took a 42-12 loss to Cassville in their opener.
Dating back to last season, the Patriots have been shut out in five of their last six games.
Last season, East Newton scored a season-high 25 points against Aurora, but the Patriots have scored only 12 points — single touchdowns against Seneca and Monett — since in the seven games after that September 8, 2017 Big 8 bash.
