GRANBY — The Cassville Wildcats could not and would not be stopped Friday night and spoiled the East Newton Patriots’ Homecoming with a 47-0 victory.

Cassville scored on all seven first half possessions.

The Wildcats opened the scoring on a 51-yard Shannon Haney to Bowen Preddy touchdown pass and then came the rain on East Newton’s parade with a 6-yard Anthony Tolbert run, a Preddy 14-yard run, a Haney 2-yard run, and a Haney to D.J. White 26-yard pass.

Cassville led 34-0 after one quarter and closed out the first half with a Logan Carlin score and a Preddy 9-yard run.

East Newton had found the end zone for back-to-back weeks in losses against Nevada and McDonald County, generating a season-high 20 points in the loss last week to the Tigers.

Opponents have outscored East Newton 217-28 this season and it certainly gets no easier for the Patriots in Week 6 when they hit the road to face the unbeaten Lamar Tigers.

Lamar owns the nation’s longest winning streak at 54 games, while East Newton holds a 17-game losing streak dating back to the 2016 season.

Both streaks began with Barack Obama still as President.

Lamar last stood on the small end of a final score in the final regular season game in 2014, taking a heartbreaking loss to former Big 8 Conference rival Carl Junction.

Even more bad news for East Newton: Lamar received a scare from Seneca in their game Friday night, leading the Indians 21-19 at halftime before responding with 28 unanswered points after halftime en route to consecutive win No. 54.

You can be sure Lamar will have the intensity cranked up to 11 starting out against East Newton.
