DIAMOND — The Marionville Comets’ stifling defense and persistent offense led the way to a 40-0 win Friday night over the Diamond Wildcats.

The loss sent Diamond to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the Southwest Conference, and the Wildcats now own a four-game losing streak headed into their Week 6 contest at home against Liberal.

Liberal, once a former Spring River Valley Conference member alongside Diamond, fell to 0-5 on the season after the Bulldogs’ 14-0 loss Friday night against Archie.

Opponents have outscored Liberal 180-20 this season, while it’s not been any less difficult for Diamond, being outscored 182-40 overall and 182-24 the past four weeks.

Since piecing together eight wins in 2016, Diamond has lost 14 of its last 15 games with the season-opening 16-0 win against Ash Grove snapping a 11-game losing streak dating back to the district playoff loss in 2016.

On Friday night, Marionville forced Diamond into four turnovers: Dodge Schapeler intercepted a pass and Chase White, Evan Dotson, and Zach Newberry each created fumbles while White, James Tucker, and Jeremy Vickers were each created with recoveries.

Dotson and Newberry each recorded a quarterback sack.

Isaac Morgan led the Marionville defense with 10 tackles (3 solo, 7 assist) and the duo of Schapeler and Dotson each came through with nine stops (both 4 solo, 5 assist).

Marionville’s offensive highlights included a 35-yard scoring pass from Wyatt Kuhs to White and a 40-yard Vickers scoring run.
