MONETT — The Seneca Lady Indians concluded a six-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory over the defending Class 3 state champion Monett Lady Cubs on Thursday.
Seneca plated one run in the second and two in the fourth, while Monett scored one in the first and second. The Lady Indians overcame three errors.
Chelsea Beville and Chaney Platner each led the Seneca attack with two hits and Mekaylee Beard and Ali Kohler each had one. Beard, Kohler, and Platner scored the Lady Indians’ runs, while Kohler, Platner, and Mady Dunbar each picked up RBI.
Down 1-0 early on, Platner gave Seneca a major spark when she bashed an one-out triple and then scored on a Dunbar 5-3 groundout.
After Monett went back ahead, Seneca went back ahead with three consecutive hits by the senior class trio of Beard, Kohler, and Platner, who have been playing varsity since their freshman year.
Beard started the hits with a double, Kohler doubled home Beard, and Platner hit the game-winning single bringing home Kohler.
Junior pitcher Beville earned the win and she allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits over seven innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Beville and Monett’s Kassie McCallister each pitched well enough to win on the average day, but the Lady Indians found the way to win with the bigger hits.
Seneca’s winning streak ended Friday with a loss in the first game of the Branson Tournament.
