ANDERSON — In a battle of opposing husband and wife coached teams, Monett (Alyssa Kennedy) defeated McDonald County (Chris Kennedy) 62-42 on Monday night in Big 8 Conference West play, outscoring McDonald County 22-8 in the fourth quarter.

Kaesha George scored a game-high 28 points for the Lady Cubs, who improved to 5-7 overall and 2-1 Big 8 West.

George established a school single game record with 14 made free throws, beating out Alexia Johnson (1992-93), Kara Doss (1994-95), and Marcy Ellis (1996-97), who each hit 13 during their performances at the stripe.

Alyssa Williams added 20 points, Abby Patton seven, and Katie Schmidt five.

McDonald County remained winless at home this season, with the Lady Mustangs' previous wins all in neutral-site tournament games (Jasper 49-36 in Carl Junction and Blue Valley North 46-39 and Joplin 40-30 in Joplin).

The Lady Mustangs, 3-10 overall and 0-2 Big West, returned to action Thursday night against Big 8 West foe East Newton. The Lady Mustangs were attempting to snap a six-game losing streak that dates back to December.

Rita Santillan led McDonald County on Monday with 15 points, Ragan Wilson added 11, and Kristin Penn rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points. The rest of the Lady Mustangs combined for a meager six points.

East Newton entered Thursday night 5-12 overall on the season and looking for its first Big 8 West victory.
