MONETT — The Monett Cubs improved to 8-9 overall and 2-1 Big 8 Conference West with a 64-59 victory Tuesday night against the East Newton Patriots.
Gavin Carr and Trevon Price each sparked Monett with 19 points and Jackson Spencer scored 13 points, a number that proved to be lucky for Monett and unlucky for East Newton.
East Newton received a game-high 26 points from sophomore Kyson Lahman, who missed a 3-point shot late that could have tied the game.
Spencer corralled the rebound and made both free throws to close out the scoring.
Connor Killion finished with seven points, as opponents continue to focus their energies on slowing down the East Newton sophomore.
Tanner Youngblood added 10 points and Lucas Kimbrough and Bryce Cambers joined Killion in netting seven.
East Newton dropped to 7-9 overall and 0-2 Big 8 West. The Patriots returned to action Thursday afternoon in the Jay (Oklahoma) Tri-State Classic against Locust Grove.
The Patriots have lost five of their last six games (Reeds Spring 71-66, Sarcoxie 75-47, Nevada 65-39, and Neosho 48-39 before Tuesday’s loss to Monett) since winning the 36th annual Southwest Boys Holiday Tournament in late December.
