The National Junior College Athletic Association released its first rankings of the regular season and the Crowder Roughriders are No. 5 in NJCAA Division I.

Crowder moved up four spots from its preseason ranking, thanks to a 13-3 start highlighted by six straight wins to start the season and then a seven-game streak entering Thursday’s Region 16 doubleheader against Maple Woods.

The ‘Riders are scheduled for a doubleheader Friday at home, weather permitting, against Maple Woods. Maple Woods no longer calls itself the Monarchs … they are now the Wolves.

Seven teams jumped into the national rankings after not being ranked or receiving votes in the preseason poll: No. 1 Central Florida (20-1), No. 3 Cochise (18-2), No. 4 Southern Nevada (21-4), No. 9 Florida SouthWestern (18-3), No. 11 Weatherford (14-3), No. 12 Northwest Florida (18-5), and No. 14 Gordon State (14-3).

Preseason No. 1 Chipola dropped down to receiving votes after starting its season 11-9. The Indians are back-to-back national champions.

Preseason No. 4 Iowa Western also dropped to receiving votes and the Reivers split a four-game series with Crowder.

Preseason No. 5 Jefferson dropped out completely and the ‘Riders swept two games from the Vikings to open Region 16 play. The Vikings are 7-6 early in the season.

Crowder swept a pair of games last Friday from Hutchinson, a team receiving votes in the first regular season poll.

Crowder had a home game Tuesday against No. 18 Connors State postponed due to weather and it would have marked four straight ranked opponents for Crowder, following Iowa Western, Jefferson, and Hutchinson.
