ST. LOUIS — No. 6-ranked Crowder opened its four-game series against St. Louis with a two-game sweep Thursday at NCAA Division II Maryville, 11-8 and 8-5 over the Archers.
In the 11-8 victory, Crowder broke a 8-all tie with three runs in the eighth and reliever Andrew Bradshaw closed the door on the Archers.
Crowder took the lead on a Colten Nix solo home run and a Brinson Williams two-run home run. The Roughriders roughed up St. Louis for two homers and one double over four pitches, as Sam Chaput sandwiched his double in between long balls.
Quinn Cherry led Crowder with three hits, two runs scored, and two RBI. Williams had a pair of hits and drove in three. Michael Chrisman and Colten Nix also scored and drove in two runs, as the trio of Chrisman, Cherry, and Nix combined to both score and drive in six runs. Williams, Nix, and Chrisman homered and Cherry, Chaput, and Nix each doubled. Freilin Cabrera drove in three runs.
Bradshaw earned the victory and he allowed two runs (both earned) on two hits over three innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
Ross Carver took a no-decision, allowing six runs (all earned) on nine hits over five innings with seven strikeouts and two walks.
In the 8-5 victory, Crowder took a 6-1 lead with three in the first, one in the second, and two in the fourth. The ‘Riders pushed across two in the sixth for critical insurance.
Chrisman and Chaput knocked RBI doubles in the sixth. Jack Stroth hit a two-run jack in the fourth. Chrisman connected on a RBI single in the second. Cabrera started the scoring with a three-run homer, just five batters into the game.
Jared Viertel earned the victory, allowing four runs (all earned) on nine hits over four innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Colin Brougham closed out the game with two scoreless innings and he recorded two strikeouts and no walks.
