The Mineral Area Cardinals won two of the last three games in their four-game Region 16 series at Roughrider Field to come away with a split against the No. 7-ranked Crowder Roughriders.

Mineral Area defeated Crowder 3-2 in 10 innings Saturday and the teams exchanged run-rule victories on Friday, 11-0 Mineral Area and 13-1 Crowder.

In the 3-2 series finale, Mineral Area’s Jared Jones worked a leadoff walk in the 10th and pinch runner Kurt Dawkins came around to score on a Liam Hicks RBI single. Dawkins stole second.

Mineral Area plated single runs in the first and fifth and Crowder did in the second and sixth.

Colten Weber took the loss for Crowder, allowing one run (earned) on two hits over 3 2/3 innings of relief with seven strikeouts and two walks. Xavier Leduc took a no-decision, allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits over six innings with five strikeouts and four walks. Three Crowder pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts and six walks.

Freilin Cabrera, Michael Chrisman, and Jorden Hussein each had two hits for the ‘Riders.

In the 13-1 victory Friday, Crowder pitcher Tanner Norris finished with a two-hitter and he struck out four and walked three over five innings.

Quinn Cherry sparked Crowder’s offense with three runs scored, three hits, and three RBI, highlighted by a home run and a double. Sam Chaput and Cameron Tissue each had a pair of hits and Cabrera and Tissue each had a pair of hits.

In the 11-0 victory by Mineral Area, the Cardinals hit Crowder with two runs in the third, five in the fourth, and four in the fifth.

Crowder managed only a single single by Cabrera against Mineral Area starter Blakeney Kearby, a redshirt freshman and spot starter.

Mineral Area moved to 18-4 overall on the season.

Crowder moved to 23-8 overall and 12-4 Region 16. The ‘Riders return home Saturday, weather permitting, to start a four-game Region 16 series against Three Rivers.
