MOUNT VERNON — East Newton’s Brett Pendergraft had a big game Monday against the Mount Vernon Mountaineers.

Unfortunately, for the Patriots, Pendergraft was the only East Newton player to have a big one during a 7-1 loss.

Pendergraft had both hits and he provided the Patriots’ lone run with a solo home run in the fourth. He also had a stolen base.

Baserunners were scarce for East Newton: Pendergraft doubled, while Hunter Liveoak and Zeke Chiles worked walks and Kaden Cook and Liveoak both took respective ones for the team. The Patriots struggled at the plate with a combined 12 strikeouts against two Mount Vernon arms.

Ethan Brummett took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on 12 hits over 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Cook picked up the other out with a five-pitch strikeout.

East Newton returns to action Friday in the Monett Invitational against unbeaten Seneca (Newton County and Big 8 Conference West rival) and then Saturday against host Monett and Marshfield.
