SARCOXIE — The Diamond Wildcats fell a couple runs shy of securing their first victory of the season, as they took a 6-4 loss Tuesday to Southwest Conference rival Sarcoxie.

Diamond fell behind Sarcoxie 5-1 after two innings and the Wildcats whittled away on the lead with single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth.

Durham Mickey took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits with one strikeout and two walks over 1 1/3 innings.

However, Leighton Bridgewater gave a strong effort in relief to keep Diamond in the game. Bridgewater allowed one run (not earned) on two hits with six strikeouts and two walks over 4 2/3.

Offensively, six different Wildcats came through with hits — Hunter Shallenburger doubled and Wes Roughton, Cameron Addington, Tucker Macy, Eli Cupp, and Mickey each singled. Macy and Shallenburger each picked up RBI. Diamond hitters worked six walks but also struck out 13 times.

On the bases, Bridgewater, Addington, and Shallenburger each stole two and Mickey gave Diamond a seventh stolen base.

Diamond, 0-8 overall, returned to action, weather permitting, Thursday with games in the Mickey Mantle Classic — Quapaw and tournament host Commerce, both at Mickey Mantle Field.
