JOPLIN — The Southwest Missouri All-Stars completed their opening round of pool play with a 3-0 record and earned the No. 3 overall seed for the second round of the Premier Junior Championship.
The All-Stars delivered their 3-0 start with a 1-0 victory Thursday evening over Stix North at Wendell Redden Stadium, their second one-run victory in a row after starting the tournament with a 20-5 win.
Southwest Missouri pitchers Cale McCallister and Tyler Ledford combined on a one-hitter and McCallister earned the victory with one hit allowed and five strikeouts and no walks over five innings. Ledford did not surrender a hit over his two innings and he recorded two strikeouts and two walks.
Southwest Missouri scored the game’s only run in the fourth — Cade Carlson reached on a single, advanced to third on a McCallister single, and scored on a Gage Kelley fielder’s choice.
Southwest Missouri collected only three hits against Stix North pitchers Colby Kroutil and Kaden Basil, two of them in that fourth inning.
Southwest Missouri returns to action at 9:30 a.m. Friday against the Arlington A’s Howeth at Warren Turner Field, the All-Stars’ third different field in as many days of the five-day tournament. The All-Stars then play Texas Stix Mistler at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Warren Turner.
The All-Stars play the Rawlings Tigers Quatro at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Joplin High School.
Other top seeds for the second round are the Midwest Nationals Merryman, the Rawlings Tigers Velo, and the Slammers Jenkins.
