NEVADA — The McDonald County Mustangs earned their second victory of the season as they blanked winless Nevada 35-0 Friday night.

Senior running back Jack Teague scored on a pair of rushing touchdowns and sophomore quarterback Cole Martin threw three touchdown passes.

McDonald County scored only 3 minutes, 56 minutes into the contest, a turnover setting up a Teague TD run.

The Mustangs took a 21-0 halftime lead after scoring twice in the final 4:26 before halftime — first on a 8-yard TD pass from Martin to Levi Malone and then on a 5-yard TD pass from Martin to Trent Alik set up by a Malone interception.

Late in the third quarter, Teague scored on a 10-yard TD run and Martin and Michael Williams closed out the scoring with 6:42 remaining in regulation on a 12-yard TD pass.

McDonald County improved to 2-3 overall and 2-0 Big 8 West, and the Mustangs play their toughest stretch to close out the regular season with games against Big 8 West stalwarts Cassville (4-1), Lamar (3-2), Monett (3-2), and Seneca (4-1).

McDonald County faces a Cassville team in Week 6 coming off back-to-back struggles against Newton County schools East Newton and Seneca. The Patriots punched Cassville right in the mouth and led 7-0 at halftime, before Cassville scored all 21 points after halftime for the victory, and the week before Seneca ended a Cassville winning streak in the regular season that dated back to 2017.

The Mustangs are seventh in the Class 4, District 6 standings with 21.4 points, still ahead of winless Hillcrest (17.75). Webb City stands at the top with 50.5, followed by Bolivar (47.5), West Plains (46.9), Willard (40.5), Carl Junction (31.7), and Neosho (25.5). Being locked into a Big 8 Conference schedule, McDonald County does not play any of these district opponents in the regular season.
