Home explosion takes life of Stella man

Fire engulfed the remains of a home in Stella after an explosion. One man died.

On Monday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m., reports of a possible house fire near the intersection of Skylark Drive and Quine Road in the Stella area resulted in multiple area fire departments responding.

Responders found the home engulfed in flames and determined the cause was an explosion. Debris from the home was scattered and portions of the remaining home were on fire.

Johnny Schofield, 40, was home at the time and died in the house.

Two state fire marshals were on scene along with fire departments that included Neosho, Stella, Granby, Goodman, and Midway.

Cause of the fire is under investigation. Preliminary indications are that the explosion was accidental and may be caused by a gas leak.

Schofield is survived by his wife, Amy, and three children.
