Weekly entertainment update with new movies in theaters this weekend and movie trailers to watch.
DR SEUSS' THE LORAX
The creative team behind “Despicable Me” takes a shot at bringing a little green to the screen by adapting the Doc’s beloved tale about preserving Earth’s delicate environment. Lending their voices are Ed Helms, Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Betty White, Milton’s Jenny Slate and Danny DeVito as the tree-hugging title character.
From the vault of producer Todd Phillips (“The Hangover” pictures) comes this lowbrow teen flick about a high school boozefest that, thanks to social media, gets broadcast all across the Internet. I sure hope the host’s parents aren’t watching.
Director Agnieszka Holland’s Oscar-nominated drama has been called the second coming of “Schindler’s List,” telling the eerily similar tale of a gentile (Robert Wieckiewicz) providing protection for refugee Jews. And as with Oskar Schindler, a money-making scheme slowly evolves into a humanitarian act of courage and mercy.
CHICO & RITA
Academy Award-winning director Fernando Trueba (“Belle Epoque”) and Spanish graphic designer Javier Mariscal join forces to tell this Oscar-nominated pen-and-ink tale about a whirlwind romance between a singer and a songwriter from Havana during Cuba’s golden age.
TIM & ERIC'S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE
Adult Swim’s Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim wrote, directed and star in this absurd tale about a couple of filmmaking hacks who are handed a billion dollars to make the world’s greatest movie. It’s a sum they quickly squander and spend the rest of the movie trying to recoup by investing in a rundown shopping mall. Make sense? Of course it doesn’t. But if it’s funny, who cares?
